Description

We are proud to offer this new class in partnership with KCD Software, ShopBot Tools, and Bits & Bits to give you the foundational skills for designing, cutting, and assembling cabinets with CNC. We will walk you through the process for building premium cabinetry with hardwood face frames for sophisticated and flexible design strategies. All students will build a base cabinet from start to finish; complete with a dovetailed drawer, a floating shelf, and an mdf carved panel door.

We will begin the course by teaching each student to design a complete base cabinet with KCD. We will use our lab computers so there is no need to bring your own unless you want to save your work for reference after the class. After completing the designs we will use our ShopBot CNC to machine the plywood and MDF parts for the cabinet boxes, drawer fronts, drawer boxes, and raised panel doors. While the CNC machine is cutting our parts we will us a table saw to cut face frame material. Once everything is cut, we will walk you through efficient joinery and assembly techniques for assembling all your parts. As we go through each course module, we will guide you in making good tool choices for each of the various tasks.

Students in this course will learn cabinet terminology, best practices for machining and assembly, and resources for sourcing commercial product. We will discuss preferred cabinetmaking bits and recommended speeds and feeds for common materials. We will also examine different materials and their applications, as well as hardware, adhesives, fasteners, abrasives, and more. Throughout the course we will teach methods for making quick jigs to aid with rapid and repeatable assembly. Each student will make a collection of these jigs to take home with them.

All materials and supplies will be provided. Students will need to bring their own eye and hearing protection.

*please note: this is an intermediate class, students need to have completed at least our CNC Basic Training class to register.
