From May 2023 to December 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to study at the North Carolina Furniture School. My time there was not only educational but genuinely transformative. I enrolled with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of woodworking and acquiring the skills necessary to launch my own business. What I walked away with far exceeded my expectations.
The curriculum was thorough and thoughtfully structured. I learned everything from foundational wood joinery and cabinet design to advanced topics like CAD/CAM for CNC machines, finishing techniques, and the mechanics of small business operations. The program bridged traditional handwork with modern technology, and the depth of instruction in both was invaluable. Two of the most impactful areas for me were CAD/CAM and wood finishing—topics I now use regularly in my own shop.
The heart of my experience, though, was the mentorship I received from my instructor, Stuart Kent. Stuart is a rare combination of master craftsman, skilled educator, and genuinely kind human being. I came into the program as a student and left as a close friend. Stuart consistently went above and beyond—tailoring lessons to align with my business goals, helping me design and build my own shop, and sharing insights from his broad experience in the woodworking world. His passion for the craft and his dedication to his students are unmatched.
One of the most memorable experiences I had at the school was helping to build a mezzanine that now serves as the CAD/CAM classroom. This large-scale project was a pivotal moment in my learning. It pushed me to apply what I had learned in a real-world setting and gave me confidence in my abilities moving forward.
The North Carolina Furniture School not only helped me reach my professional goals but also gave me life skills that I didn’t expect to gain—resilience, adaptability, and a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship. I’m proud to say I was part of this community, and I’d recommend it to anyone serious about woodworking and personal growth.

“I’ve taken 3 classes at this school over the last year and they have helped increase my skill level and knowledge tremendously. They have changed how I approach any woodworking project I attempt. And because of the things Stuart taught me, it has helped me work smarter and significantly increased my enjoyment while working on a project. I would highly recommend any class he offers.”

Thad Souder

“A coworker and I took a basic CNC machining class here, and Stuart did an excellent job teaching us everything he promised he would and more. We came away with new knowledge, new ideas, and a classroom full of new friends.”

Eddie Bernard

“I took a wood turning class here back in December and it was definitely the best Christmas present I could get myself. Gave me the confidence in safety and skill I needed to get started. The town is also a quiet place to spend a weekend. I hope to be back soon for a follow-up course or to try something new in furniture building.”
