Intro to Wood Joinery
Introduction to Wood Joinery
This hands-on, in-person class provides a comprehensive foundation in the most essential wood joints used in general carpentry, cabinetry, and fine furniture making. Whether you’re a beginner or a hobbyist looking to refine your skills, this course teaches you how to create strong, accurate, and repeatable joints using woodworking machines commonly found in home and small professional shops.
From the beginning, you’ll gain practical experience with core shop equipment—including the table saw, bandsaw, router, and drill press. These machines form the backbone of modern woodworking, and you’ll learn how to use them safely and effectively to produce precise joints. As the class progresses, we’ll introduce you to each joint type, explain when and why it’s used, and demonstrate techniques that help you execute clean, consistent results.
Moreover, we emphasize essential concepts such as joinery nomenclature, operator safety, accuracy, and cut repeatability. You won’t just observe demonstrations—you’ll actively apply what you learn by producing a complete set of joinery samples. These samples become valuable references for your future woodworking projects.
This class was designed as an immediate follow up to our Intro to Woodworking Class, be sure to register for both!
During the course, you will create hands-on examples of the following joints:
Butt Joints
Miter Joints
Splined Miter Joints
Dowel Joints
Lap Joints
Grooves
Dados
Rabets
Finger Joints
Box Joints
Blind, Pinned, and Through Mortise & Tenon Joints
Floating Tenons
Through, Half-blind, and Sliding Dovetails
Although we focus on machine-made joinery, this class also builds a foundation that supports future exploration of hand-cut techniques. By the end of the course, you will understand not only how to make each joint, but also which ones are best suited for different structural and aesthetic applications.
Classes begin promptly at 9:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM. Throughout the day, you’ll work in a fully equipped shop environment designed for both safety and efficiency. Instructors provide individual feedback and guidance, helping you build confidence with every cut.
Whether you’re building cabinets, furniture, or functional home projects, this class equips you with the skills and knowledge to move forward with precision and purpose.
