Understanding Wood Finishes

Wood finishing can feel overwhelming due to the wide range of available materials—penetrating oils, synthetic varnishes, lacquers, shellac, dyes, stains, gels, paints, sanding sealers, grain fillers, putties, waxes, solvents, and urethanes. That’s why we designed this class to help you make sense of the options and learn how, when, and why to use them.

Start with Surface Preparation

We begin by teaching the basics of material selection and surface prep. You’ll learn how to evaluate wood species and conditions to choose the best finish for your specific project. Then, we examine different abrasives and demonstrate how to use them effectively for optimal results.

Explore Sealers, Dyes, and Stains

Next, we focus on sealing and coloring techniques. We show you how to apply wood sealers, then walk you through the process of using dyes and stains to bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into how to achieve consistent coloration and avoid common mistakes.

Apply Film Finishes, Waxes, and Polishes

After sealing and coloring, we shift focus to topcoats. You’ll explore a range of film finishes—such as varnishes and urethanes—alongside waxes and polishes. We’ll cover how to build a finish, layer by layer, and how to protect it over time.

Dive into Paints and Priming Techniques

In the final section of the Wood Finishing Class For Beginners, we introduce paints. You’ll learn about different paint types, from milk paint to modern lacquers, and understand the quality spectrum. From there, we explain how to prepare materials for paint, properly apply primers, and use brushing and spraying techniques to get smooth, professional-looking results.

Wood Finishing Class For Beginners; Class Details and What to Bring

We encourage you to take notes throughout the Wood Finishing Class For Beginners workshop and ask questions as needed. All students must bring their own safety glasses. Class runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on both days.
