What You’ll Learn in This Woodturning Class

We begin each day with a brief overview of what to expect and what you’ll accomplish. On the first morning, we’ll cover woodshop safety, introduce the tools and equipment used for turning, and help you get comfortable working in a professional studio environment.

Here’s what we’ll explore over the three days:

  • Tool & Machinery Basics – Learn how to safely use lathes, gouges, and scrapers.

  • Material Selection & Prep – Understand types of wood, how to store and dry them, and how to prep them for turning.

  • Wood Movement – Explore how moisture and grain affect your turning.

  • Types of Turning – Discover the difference between spindle turning and faceplate (bowl) turning.

  • Lathe Techniques – Practice shaping wood into cylinders, cones, beads, coves, square-to-round transitions, and bowls.

  • Bandsaw Techniques – Learn how to safely prepare wood blanks for the lathe using a bandsaw.

You’ll complete a series of daily exercises that build your skills and confidence, step-by-step. Each project is designed to reinforce key techniques and give you real results you can be proud of.
