Decorative Wood Box Class

Take your woodworking skills to the next level in this intermediate Decorative Wood Box Class at the North Carolina Furniture School. Designed for students with some shop experience, this hands-on woodworking course focuses on the design, joinery, and finishing techniques used in the construction of fine decorative boxes. You’ll complete three unique wood boxes during the class—each showcasing a different style of decorative joinery—to take home and display with pride.

Learn to Build and Design Fine Decorative Wood Boxes

We begin with a splined-miter box, where you’ll learn to make clean, accurate miters and strengthen them with decorative cross-grain splines. This classic technique adds both visual interest and long-lasting structural strength.

Next, you’ll create a finger-jointed box, developing precision in cutting accurate, repeatable finger joints and experimenting with alternating wood species to highlight the joint pattern.

Finally, you’ll take on a small dovetailed box, the hallmark of fine woodworking craftsmanship. This project refines your skills in layout, cutting, and fitting dovetails by hand or machine.

Add Functional and Artistic Details

Each box will feature sleeved inserts, fitted lids, and cut lids, giving you the opportunity to explore multiple lid designs and interior solutions. You’ll also learn to make aesthetic decisions that improve both form and function, such as selecting complementary wood species and grain orientation for maximum visual appeal.

We’ll compare three different finishing methods, allowing you to see how each technique enhances the natural beauty of the wood while offering varying levels of protection and sheen.

Develop Your Craft with Advanced Techniques

Throughout this decorative wood box class, you’ll gain insights into:

  • Unique lid design and creative variations

  • Material selection for fine decorative projects

  • Precision joinery techniques for small-scale craftsmanship

  • Finishing and detailing for professional results
