North Carolina Furniture School Weekend Workshop: Introduction to Woodturning

Join us for two full days of woodturning! This course is designed to introduce you to the tools and techniques for safe, efficient woodturning. It’s a good course for beginners because it starts with the basics, provides a strong foundation in shop safety, and launches you right into fast and efficient woodturning. You will gain a solid understanding of common tooling, machine options and features, types of cuts, basic lathe joinery for furniture making, spindle turning, bowl turning, and more!

Both days will begin with a morning presentation and Q & A session, followed by hands-on learning at the lathe. Materials are included. Samples will include a bead and cove set, cylinders, cones, joinery samples, and a completed wooden bowl.

This course introduces the materials and methods for safe, efficient woodturning, with emphasis on making fine wooden hollow vessels for utility and display. Hollow Form Woodturning is a good course for all woodworking skill levels. The course will lead students through material preparation, design, tooling, hands-on woodturning, and finishing. Introduction to Segmented Woodturning @ the North Carolina Furniture School

Advance your woodturning skills and join us for an Introduction to Segmented Woodturning. In this class you will learn the fundamentals for making complex vessels from small segments of wood. This technique is dependent on a high degree of accuracy and enables you to build forms using less material, with far greater complexity and infinite variety.

Participants will learn the theories and vernacular for building segmented vessel forms. You will also learn how to create segment sled for making repeatable and accurate segments in your shop. We will explore various methods for flattening rings, simplifying glue ups, workholding, etc. Student will create a basic segmented vessel over the two days. There are 8 available seats for this class and they fill quickly, so register early!
