Are you interested in making custom pens and pencils on a wood lathe for fun or profit? This is the class for you. The class will be taught in three parts: Tools, Materials, & Process. As we progress through each part of the class we will comprehensively examine the materials and methods to equip you with the skills to hand craft all styles of fine writing implements in your shop. We will provide quick reference handouts for the key components of the class.
Part 1, Tools: will examine all available tooling and various methods for material preparation, turning, sanding, and finishing. We will review various kit options, mandrels, barrels, bushings, presses, etc.
Part 2: Materials: will examine commercially available materials that come in different stages of preparation, we will prepare stock from rough lumber in the shop, and we will cast synthetics with earthen materials and pigments.
Part 3: Process: each student will make three items to take home; a 5.6mm Artist’s Pencil, two Ball Point Pens. You will be able to pick your material for each of these, and go through all of the steps from material preparation to finishing.
