Build the schoolbox from the 1839 woodworking text “The Joiner and Cabinet Maker” (Currently published by Lost Art Press). This intermediate project will test students’ skills from stock preparation to hand-cut dovetails. Students will begin with rough stock and learn the basics of furniture assembly as they bring this classic project to life. Students will also learn to let-in hinges, and to make and fit moulding by hand.
Required tools: A dovetail saw, coping saw, ½” chisel, ¼” chisel mallet, marking gauge, marking knife (or pencil), dividers, handsaws (rip and crosscut), 12” combination square, jack plane (Stanley no. 5 or similar), hammer. Suggested tools: Trying plane (Stanley no.7 or similar) and smoothing plane (Stanley no. 3 or 4 or similar)
