What is digital fabrication? What is CNC? CAD? CAM? How does it work – and what does it do?

This class will familiarize you with the terminology, user interface, and the general concepts of digital fabrication. It will also introduce the world of possibilities these tools can open up to you. Everything will be presented in an easy to understand manner, and we will advance patiently through each topic. We will explore the digital work space, common tooling, and the physical machinery by having each student design projects on their computer and directing the machinery to fabricate the project they design. Each project will progressively build on the steps and concepts as we move along to help you move forward confidently and don’t get overwhelmed.

This foundation class is part one of a three part course of study. The second class in this series will focus on tooling, material selection, machine setup, and will introduce new design possibilities inside the Patch Workspace. The third class will focus on CAM setup, feeds, speeds, bit selection and cutting. ***All three classes are required to qualify for laboratory access to the North Carolina Furniture School CNC equipment which will begin after the conclusion of the third class in this series during Fall 2019.***

Each student will need to supply their own laptop and a mouse (not just a computer trackpad) with the free version of Autodesk Fusion 360 installed

  • 64 bit processor (32 bit is not supported for the applications we will run in this class)
  • 512MB GDDR RAM or more
  • greater than 5GB available hard drive space (we will not use near that amount but these systems run faster and better with more space)
