Class 2 of 3 in a foundations course of study on CNC for Woodworkers.

The first class in this series introduces you to the CNC systems and how they work together. This class builds on that foundation by diving deeper into each part of the CNC system.

In this class we will expand on topics from level 1 with a deeper look at the CAD workspace. We will examine drawing for accurate joinery, two sided machining, layering, stepping, and more.

Then we’ll jump back into the CAM workspace to build on your understanding of how to convert drawings into toolpaths so you can make the things you think up. You will learn to program feeds and speeds appropriate to the bits you select and the materials you are cutting. We will help you understand which tooling to choose and why. We will examine chip load, programming for multiple bit changes, two sided machining, and more. In this part of the class we talk in depth about the tooling so you gain a bedrock understanding of what different cutters look like and what the different tooling actually does. We will help you understand how to choose the right bits for your projects and how to program your CAM system to use them properly. We will also teach you how to store and care for your tooling, understand quality differences, load and unload the spindle, and we will give you sources for where to buy quality tooling at reasonable prices.

We will finish out the day by MAKING NEW STUFF! These lessons will include: safety checks, connectivity, tool changing, loading materials and work holding, spindle warm up, finding position, jogging, and setting zero on all the axes. Then we will MAKE SOME STUFF by executing the files you designed earlier in the day.

This will be a fun class, where the tech behind CNC will start to make real sense and you’ll take the big strides toward using these machines to make stuff efficiently and accurately! There are only 12 seats available, so be sure to reserve you seat in this class before they fill up, and we’ll see you in the shop!
